Background:

  • Intracolonic bypass tubes are used to protect surgical anastomoses in the colon.
  • A novel Valtrac-secured intracolonic bypass incorporating a biofragmentable anastomosis ring (BAR) was developed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new Valtrac-secured intracolonic bypass in protecting colonic anastomoses in an animal model.
  • To determine if this device can prevent anastomotic leakage and obviate the need for a diverting colostomy.

Main Methods:

  • Eighteen piglets were divided into three groups (n=6 each).
  • Group A: Colon resection, anastomosis, and Valtrac-secured intracolonic bypass.
  • Group B: Same as Group A with added colonic outlet obstruction. Group C (control): Colon resection and anastomosis without bypass.
