Background:

Dishevelled (Dvl) proteins are crucial in Wnt signaling pathways.
Dvl1 is one of three mammalian homologs of the Drosophila Dishevelled gene.
The precise role of Dvl1 in mammalian complex behaviors remains largely unexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the behavioral phenotype of mice completely deficient for Dvl1.
To explore the potential involvement of Dvl1 in social interaction and sensorimotor gating.

Main Methods:

Gene targeting was employed to create Dvl1-deficient mice.
Behavioral assessments included social interaction tests, nest-building assays, and sensorimotor gating (prepulse inhibition) measurements.

Main Results:

Dvl1-deficient mice were viable, fertile, and structurally normal.
Significant deficits in social behaviors were observed, including altered whisker trimming, impaired nest-building, reduced huddling, and subordinate responses.
Abnormal sensorimotor gating was evident, with deficits in prepulse inhibition of acoustic and tactile startle.

Conclusions:

Dvl1 plays a critical role in regulating complex social behaviors and sensorimotor gating in mice.
Dvl1-deficient mice represent a valuable model for studying aspects of human psychiatric disorders.
These findings implicate Dvl1 in the genetic mechanisms underlying complex behaviors and suggest shared pathways for social and sensorimotor functions.
