Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) requires effective anesthesia.
  • Optimizing patient comfort and recovery is crucial for FESS procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a topical anesthetic technique using 25% cocaine paste and intravenous midazolam hydrochloride for FESS.
  • To assess patient outcomes, including operative field quality, patient disturbance, recovery time, and complication rates.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 554 patients undergoing FESS received anesthesia via 25% cocaine paste and intravenous midazolam hydrochloride.
  • Data collected included operative field quality, patient tolerance, recovery parameters, and complication incidence.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The anesthetic technique provided excellent operative fields for FESS.
  • Patients experienced minimal disturbance, rapid recovery from sedation, and same-day discharge eligibility.
  • No anesthetic complications were recorded, and the major surgical complication rate was low at 0.5%.

Conclusions:

  • The combination of 25% cocaine paste and midazolam hydrochloride is an effective and safe anesthetic approach for FESS.
  • This technique facilitates efficient surgical procedures with favorable patient outcomes and a low complication profile.
