Area of Science:

  • Sleep Medicine
  • Otolaryngology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Sleep-related laryngospasm is a rare condition characterized by abrupt sleep interruption, suffocation, and stridor.
  • Few peer-reviewed studies document this condition, despite its inclusion in diagnostic manuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the distinct clinical presentation of sleep-related laryngospasm.
  • To investigate potential underlying causes and contributing factors.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of medical histories from 10 patients diagnosed with sleep-related laryngospasm.
  • Inclusion of pulmonary and gastroenterological assessments.
  • Evaluation of patient and family accounts of nocturnal attacks.

Main Results:

  • All 10 patients reported sudden awakenings with intense fear, suffocation, and stridor.
  • Nine patients showed evidence of gastro-oesophageal reflux; six improved with antireflux therapy.
  • Attacks, lasting minutes, resulted in exhaustion.

Conclusions:

  • Nocturnal choking attacks are attributed to laryngospasm.
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux is a potential underlying factor in laryngeal irritability.
  • Further research is needed to understand the exact pathogenesis.
