Summary

A rapid decline in core body temperature (CBT) promotes sleep initiation and deeper sleep stages. This temperature drop, occurring closer to sleep onset during disentrainment, correlated with increased slow-wave sleep.

Background:

  • Core body temperature (CBT) fluctuations are linked to circadian rhythms and sleep-wake cycles.
  • The precise relationship between the rate of CBT decline and sleep initiation remains an area of investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between the maximum rate of decline (MROD) in CBT and sleep onset (SO).
  • To examine how the timing of MROD relative to SO influences sleep quality, including slow-wave sleep (SWS).
  • To assess age-related differences in CBT and SO timing.

Main Methods:

  • Continuous electroencephalograph (EEG) and CBT monitoring were conducted on 44 subjects (19-82 years) over baseline and disentrainment periods.
  • Sleep variables, including SO and sleep stages, were analyzed from polysomnography.
