Abstract:
In May 1995 the NSW Health Department released their Report Issues Relating to Specialty Nursing Vacancies. The Report was commissioned when the NSW Health Department's reporting system revealed the re-emergence of specialty nursing vacancies as an issue in NSW. Ten focus groups were held during February and March 1995 in six health service areas representative of metropolitan, rural and remote health service delivery in NSW. The aim of the study was to identify generic factors, if any, which applied across all specialty nursing disciplines which affected recruitment and retention of specialist nurses. It was considered these factors, had general application. Specialty nurses are drawn from a generalists pool of nurses and the Department wanted to know why generalist nurses were not moving into specialist areas.
