Area of Science:

  • Mycology
  • Pulmonology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic fungal infection endemic to Latin America.
  • Pulmonary involvement is common, but solitary lesions are rare.
  • Paracoccidioidomycosis is caused by the fungus *Paracoccidioides brasiliensis*.

Observation:

  • A unique case of a solitary pulmonary lesion, termed paracoccidioidoma, was identified.
  • This represents the first documented instance of such a lesion in Brazil.
  • The lesion exhibited characteristics suggestive of spontaneous regression.

Findings:

  • The case highlights the diverse clinical presentations of paracoccidioidomycosis.
  • The presence of a solitary, potentially regressive lesion challenges typical disease progression patterns.
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic considerations for rare presentations are discussed.

Implications:

  • This finding expands the understanding of paracoccidioidomycosis, particularly its pulmonary manifestations.
  • It suggests that paracoccidioidomycosis may have a broader spectrum of clinical outcomes than previously recognized.
  • Further research into spontaneously regressive lesions could inform treatment strategies for paracoccidioidomycosis.
