Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) often presents with vague symptoms.
  • Hypercalcaemia in PHPT necessitates careful management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism.
  • To determine the long-term outcomes of surgical intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 214 patients undergoing parathyroidectomy over 25 years.
  • Assessment of postoperative calcium levels and complication rates.

Main Results:

  • 95% of patients achieved permanent postoperative normocalcaemia.
  • The complication rate was low at 2.8%.

Related Experiment Videos

Conclusions:

  • Parathyroidectomy is a safe and effective treatment for primary hyperparathyroidism.
  • Surgical intervention should be considered for all patients with PHPT, irrespective of symptom severity or age.
