Sudden strenuous exercise (SSE) without warm-up does not impair left ventricular (LV) function in healthy young males. This study found no significant differences in LV dimensions or function between SSE with and without warm-up, challenging prior research.

  • The impact of warm-up protocols on LV response to SSE requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of SSE with and without warm-up on LV internal dimensions and posterior wall thickness.
  • To determine if a warm-up protocol mitigates potential negative effects of SSE on cardiac function.

Main Methods:

  • 15 healthy, untrained college-aged males underwent echocardiography to measure LV dimensions (LVEDD, LVESD, SD, FS) and posterior wall thickness (PWT).
  • Participants performed SSE (30s of cycling at 400W) with and without a 6-minute warm-up protocol.

  • Continuous EKG and blood pressure monitoring were performed at rest and during exercise.
  • Main Results:

    • No significant differences were observed in LV internal dimensions (LVEDD, LVESD, FS, PWT), heart rate, rate-pressure product, ECG, or mean arterial pressure between SSE with and without warm-up.
    • SSE, even without a warm-up, was not associated with reduced LV function in this cohort.

    Conclusions:

    • Sudden strenuous exercise without warm-up does not appear to induce left ventricular dysfunction in healthy, untrained young males.
    • Warm-up exercise does not significantly alter the acute cardiac response to SSE in this population.
    • Findings contradict previous research suggesting SSE may lead to transient global LV dysfunction.
