    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Sleep Medicine
    • Respiratory Medicine
    • Neurology

    Background:

    • Sleep apnea syndrome, previously recognized primarily in adults, is increasingly identified in pediatric populations.
    • Nocturnal polygraphic monitoring is the gold standard for diagnosing sleep-related breathing disorders.

    Observation:

    • Eight children aged 5–14 years were diagnosed with sleep apnea syndrome.
    • Key presenting symptoms included excessive daytime sleepiness, decreased school performance, behavioral issues, enuresis, headaches, weight abnormalities, and hypertension.
    • Loud snoring with observed pauses during sleep was a significant indicator.

    Findings:

    • The diagnosed sleep apnea syndrome in these children mirrored adult presentations.
    • A constellation of daytime symptoms, when associated with snoring and sleep pauses, strongly suggests pediatric sleep apnea.

    Implications:

    • Early diagnosis and intervention for pediatric sleep apnea are crucial.
    • Surgical treatment demonstrates potential for complete resolution of clinical symptoms in affected children.
    • Increased awareness of these symptoms is vital for pediatricians and parents to facilitate timely diagnosis.
