Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • True tumors of the thyroid gland (benign and malignant) are infrequent occurrences.
  • Thyroid neoplasms typically manifest as solitary thyroid nodules.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To summarize the diagnostic and treatment modalities for thyroid gland tumors.

Main Methods:

  • Review of diagnostic techniques including fine-needle aspiration and cytology.
  • Evaluation of treatment options, focusing on surgical resection.

Main Results:

  • Solitary thyroid nodules are the common presentation for thyroid tumors.
  • Fine-needle aspiration and cytology are effective diagnostic tools.
  • Surgical resection is the predominant treatment for most thyroid tumors.

Conclusions:

  • Thyroid tumors are uncommon but usually present as solitary nodules.
  • Accurate diagnosis is achievable through fine-needle aspiration and cytology.
  • Surgical intervention remains the mainstay treatment for the majority of thyroid neoplasms.
