Large phlebotomy in variegate porphyria

Summary

Therapeutic phlebotomy, involving significant blood loss, did not trigger acute porphyric symptoms in patients with coexisting porphyria cutanea tarda and variegate porphyria. This suggests that acute hepatic porphyria is not worsened by the metabolic demands of blood loss.
