Area of Science:

  • Perinatal psychology
  • Maternal mental health
  • Social sciences

Background:

  • Stillbirth significantly impacts maternal well-being.
  • Long-term psychological effects of stillbirth are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the long-term psychosocial well-being of mothers experiencing stillbirth.
  • To compare outcomes with mothers experiencing livebirth.

Main Methods:

  • Nationwide Swedish study (1994) of 380 stillbirth and 379 livebirth mothers.
  • Postal questionnaire data collected in 1994, with an 84% response rate.

Main Results:

  • Stillbirth survivors reported improved relationships with the baby's father (1.8x) and higher home/family satisfaction (1.3x).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Lower satisfaction with external appreciation was noted (3.7x).
  • Separation/divorce rates were similar (8%) for both groups; marital status significantly modified outcomes for single women.
  • Conclusions:

    • Stillbirth enhances intimate and family relationships but reduces external social validation.
    • Risk of separation/divorce is not increased by stillbirth.
    • Single women require targeted psychosocial support due to increased risk of social complications.
