Summary

Icteric-type hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is rare, often advanced, and has a high early mortality. However, hepatic resection can be effective for select patients, with some achieving long-term survival.

Background:

  • Icteric-type hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), presenting with jaundice, is a rare subtype.
  • Hepatic resection for icteric HCC is infrequently performed due to rarity and advanced stage.

Observation:

  • This study analyzed five cases of icteric HCC among 438 patients undergoing hepatic resection.
  • Most icteric HCC cases presented at advanced stages, correlating with a high incidence of early mortality.

Findings:

  • Despite advanced stages, two patients who underwent hepatic resection showed no recurrence at 8 years 7 months and 13 months.
  • Diagnostic challenges include differentiating icteric HCC from choledocholithiasis and cholangiocarcinoma.
