[Irradiation of the thyroid gland: changes in its function]

J L Genovés, F J Castillo, C Romero

    Revista Iberica De Endocrinologia
    |January 1, 1976
    PubMed
    Summary

Thyroid gland function in larynx cancer patients receiving telecobalt therapy showed minimal changes. This study indicates the adult thyroid gland exhibits low radiosensitivity to secondary irradiation.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Oncology
    • Radiation Medicine

    Context:

    • Larynx carcinoma patients undergoing telecobalt therapy receive secondary irradiation.
    • Thyroid function evaluation is crucial in cancer patients undergoing radiation treatment.

    Purpose:

    • To assess the impact of secondary irradiation from telecobalt therapy on thyroid gland function in larynx carcinoma patients.
    • To evaluate key thyroid function parameters post-irradiation.

    Summary:

    • The study analyzed iodine uptake, Hamolsky index, T4, free T4 (FT4), protein-bound iodine (PB127I), and cholesterol levels in 20 larynx cancer patients.
    • Statistical analysis of these parameters revealed a very low clinical and analytical radiosensitivity of the normal adult thyroid gland.

    Impact:

    • Findings suggest that the adult thyroid gland is resilient to secondary irradiation doses typically encountered in larynx cancer telecobalt therapy.
    • Provides valuable data for understanding the long-term effects of radiation on thyroid function in cancer survivors.
