Summary

Brown recluse spider bites can cause severe systemic effects. However, a Loxosceles arizonica bite in a teen resulted in shock and skin lesions, highlighting a potential for severe reactions in this species.

Background:

  • Loxosceles reclusa envenomation is linked to shock, hemolysis, renal issues, and DIC.
  • Loxosceles arizonica, found in the Southwestern US and Mexico, has not been previously associated with shock.

Observation:

  • A 13-year-old girl experienced shock and a characteristic skin lesion after a confirmed Loxosceles arizonica bite.
  • Medical evaluation ruled out infectious causes for the patient's shock.

Findings:

  • The patient developed shock and a cutaneous manifestation following L. arizonica envenomation.
  • Despite the shock, the patient did not exhibit renal insufficiency or disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
