Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of lipolysis in the age-related decrease in fat oxidation in women.
  • To measure in vivo fatty acid production rates as a proxy for lipolysis in young and elderly women.

Main Methods:

  • Study included 21 healthy women: 11 elderly (>65 years) and 10 young (<24 years).
  • Body composition was assessed for all participants.
  • In vivo rate of fatty acid production (lipolysis proxy) was measured and adjusted for fat-free mass using ANCOVA.

Main Results:

  • Unadjusted systemic fatty acid delivery rates were similar between elderly and young women.
  • After adjusting for fat-free mass, lipolysis rates showed non-statistically significant increases in the elderly and decreases in the young.
  • These findings indicate lipolysis is not the primary driver of reduced fat oxidation in aging women.

Conclusions:

  • Mechanisms other than lipolysis must account for decreased fat oxidation in aging women.
  • Potential contributing factors include reduced muscle capacity for fat oxidation or impaired long-chain fatty acid transport.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the specific molecular and cellular mechanisms involved.
