Summary

This study compared XDH/XO activity in placentae from laboring and non-laboring women. XO activity was significantly higher in placentae from women who gave birth during labor (P = 0.003). This suggests that labor conditions may enhance the conversion of XDH to XO, which is linked to free radical production. The findings imply that labor could contribute to oxidative stress in placental tissues. The study used biochemical assays to measure enzyme activity in placental samples from elective and labor-induced cesarean deliveries. No prior work had directly tested this hypothesis in human placentae.
