Dissecting aneurysm and cardiac tamponade

G N Kolte, J L Vegad, R P Awadhiya

    The Veterinary Record
    |June 5, 1976

    Summary

A sudden death in a Gir cow was caused by a dissecting aortic aneurysm. Rupture of the aorta led to cardiac tamponade, linked to onchocercosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Pathology
    • Cardiovascular Diseases in Livestock
    • Parasitic Infections

    Background:

    • Sudden death in cattle can have various etiologies.
    • Aortic aneurysms are rare but serious cardiovascular events.
    • Onchocercosis is a parasitic disease affecting livestock.

    Observation:

    • A Gir cow presented with sudden death.
    • Necropsy revealed a dissecting aortic aneurysm.
    • The intrapericardial aorta showed signs of damage.

    Findings:

    • The dissecting aortic aneurysm ruptured intrapericardially.
    • Rupture resulted in fatal cardiac tamponade.
    • Histopathological examination indicated onchocercosis as the underlying cause of aortic damage.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights onchocercosis as a potential cause of aortic aneurysms and sudden death in cattle.
    • Understanding parasitic impacts on cardiovascular health is crucial for livestock management.
    • Further research into the pathogenesis of onchocercosis-induced aortic disease is warranted.
