The endoscopy corner: ileoscopy: I. evaluation of "ileostomy dysfunction"
The American Journal of Gastroenterology
|April 1, 1976
Insights
Pediatric flexible fiberoptic endoscopy aids in diagnosing ileostomy dysfunction. This technique allows for direct visualization and biopsies of the stoma and small bowel up to 50 cm.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric surgery
- Gastroenterology
- Endoscopy
Background:
- Ileostomy dysfunction presents a clinical challenge.
- Accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the utility of pediatric flexible fiberoptic endoscopy for diagnosing ileostomy dysfunction.
- To demonstrate the feasibility of endoscopic visualization and biopsy in the small bowel.
Main Methods:
- Utilized a pediatric-size flexible fiberoptic endoscope.
- Performed direct visual inspection of the stoma and proximal small bowel.
- Obtained photographic documentation and biopsies.
Main Results:
- Successfully identified various causes of ileostomy dysfunction.
- Visualized the stoma area and up to 40-50 cm into the small bowel.
- Facilitated biopsies for histological examination.
Conclusions:
- Pediatric flexible fiberoptic endoscopy is an effective tool for diagnosing ileostomy dysfunction.
- The procedure allows for comprehensive assessment and tissue sampling.
Abstract:
Various causes of "ileostomy dysfunction" may be easily identified using the pediatric-size flexible fiberoptic endoscope. Direct visual inspection, photographs, and biopsies may be obtained from the area around the stoma up to a depth of 40-50 cm. within the small bowel.
