Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Digital Health
  • Primary Care Medicine

Background:

  • General practitioners (GPs) often require specialist cardiac support.
  • Timely access to cardiology expertise can improve patient outcomes.
  • Telemedicine offers a potential solution for remote cardiac consultations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the initial phase of a telecardiology diagnostic service for GPs.
  • To assess the feasibility, reliability, and efficacy of remote ECG interpretation.
  • To determine the impact of telecardiology on GP decision-making and patient management.

Main Methods:

  • 93 GPs in 26 health centers were provided with direct telephone access to a cardiologist.
  • Hand-held, automatic 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) transmitters were used for on-line consultations.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Clinical details, reason for consultation, and ECG signals were transmitted for interpretation.
  • Main Results:

    • 2563 consultations were conducted over 18 months.
    • Urgent cardiac problems were identified in 19% of patients (479).
    • 81% of patients (2084) did not require hospital admission or further outpatient investigation.

    Conclusions:

    • Telecardiology is a simple, reliable, and efficacious service for routine primary care.
    • The service provides instant cardiac assessment, supporting GP decision-making.
    • Preliminary cost analysis suggests teleconsultations are substantially cheaper than conventional referrals.
