Summary

Home heating, particularly burning slack coal, significantly elevates carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) levels in patients with respiratory issues. Pulse oximetry may inaccurately estimate oxygen saturation in these cases.

  • Patients burning slack coal for heat showed significantly higher mean HbCO levels (4.63 +/- 2.87%) compared to those with central heating (2.15 +/- 0.87%) and a control group (1.53 +/- 0.96%).
  • Pulse oximetry (SpO2) overestimated hemoglobin oxygen saturation compared to direct measurement (SaO2) in patients with elevated HbCO.
