Companion animals reach an older age because of advances in veterinary medicine. Pets with cancer are an important group of patients that are frequently presented to the general practitioner for diagnosis and treatment. In order to fulfill these demands it is essential to have basic knowledge about cancer and its treatment. The surgeon plays an important role in the treatment of companion animals with oncologic diseases. Surgery is one of the most successful treatment options for many tumor types. A radical surgery after an accurate diagnosis results in the best chance for a total cure. The goal of this article is to review the important principles of oncologic surgery. Topics such as biopsy techniques, and oncologic surgery techniques will be discussed.
