Summary

Protein-calorie malnutrition in rats significantly reduces allergic lung inflammation by lowering anaphylactic antibody levels. This suggests malnutrition impacts antibody production, not mediator release or vascular response, in allergic reactions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of protein-calorie malnutrition on allergic lung inflammation in a rat model.

Main Methods:

  • Anaphylactic reactions were induced in rat lungs.
  • Vascular permeability was measured using the Evans blue extravasation method.
  • Two dietary groups were studied: normoproteic (18% protein) and hypoproteic (4.5% protein), inducing severe malnutrition.

Main Results:

  • Malnourished rats showed significantly lower allergic lung inflammation and vascular permeability.
