Summary

Hormone replacement therapy significantly lowered intraocular pressure in menopausal women. This study suggests HRT may benefit eye health by reducing IOP.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Endocrinology
  • Women's Health

Background:

  • Menopause is associated with various physiological changes.
  • Intraocular pressure (IOP) is a critical factor in ocular health.
  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is used to manage menopausal symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of HRT on IOP in menopausal women.
  • To determine if HRT influences intraocular pressure levels.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 25 menopausal women without prior eye conditions was studied.
  • Intraocular pressure was measured pre-therapy and at 1, 4, and 12 weeks post-initiation of HRT.
  • Standardized, time-specific IOP measurements were taken throughout the day.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Mean IOP in the left eye decreased from 16.2 mmHg to 14.0 mmHg after 12 weeks of HRT (P < 0.001).
  • Mean IOP in the right eye decreased from 15.3 mmHg to 14.0 mmHg after 12 weeks of HRT (P < 0.001).
  • The observed IOP reduction was statistically significant in both eyes.

Conclusions:

  • Hormone replacement therapy demonstrates a beneficial effect on intraocular pressure in menopausal women.
  • HRT may play a role in managing or improving ocular health parameters related to IOP.
