Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Social Psychology
  • Communication Studies

Background:

  • Individual differences in interpersonal perception are crucial for social interactions.
  • Social anxiety, characterized by communication apprehension and shyness, may influence how individuals perceive others.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between communication apprehension, shyness, sociability, and interpersonal perception.
  • To test hypotheses regarding individual differences in the ability to accurately perceive interpersonal cues.

Main Methods:

  • 160 undergraduates completed the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension Scale, the Shyness and Sociability Scale, and the Interpersonal Perception Task-15 (IPT-15).
  • The IPT-15 videotape was used as a criterion measure for interpersonal perception accuracy.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Communication apprehension scores were negatively correlated with IPT-15 scores.
  • Shyness scores showed a negative correlation with IPT-15 scores.
  • Sociability scores demonstrated a positive correlation with IPT-15 scores.

Conclusions:

  • The findings support an association between higher levels of social anxiety (communication apprehension, shyness) and diminished interpersonal perception abilities.
  • Sociability appears to be a protective factor, enhancing interpersonal perception accuracy.
  • Understanding these links is vital for interventions aimed at improving social functioning.
