Gastroesophageal reflux disease: a common condition in the elderly

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition frequently seen in the primary care setting and is more common among the elderly. Its manifestations may mimic other disease processes, and therefore the practitioner must be able to determine the cause of the presenting symptoms and know when to refer the patient for further diagnostic testing. When the presentation is straightforward, the practitioner should initiate treatment for GERD. Management of GERD must include patient education regarding postural measures, dietary and lifestyle modifications, and pharmacologic interventions.
