    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Medicine
    • Cardiology
    • General Practice

    Background:

    • Chest pain is a frequent presenting complaint in pediatric emergency departments.
    • Distinguishing benign causes from serious underlying conditions is crucial for appropriate management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the causes and characteristics of chest pain in a pediatric population.
    • To assess the frequency and diagnostic categories of pediatric chest pain.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study identifying 43 children presenting with chest pain.
    • Analysis of diagnostic categories, patient demographics, symptom characteristics, and follow-up data.

    Main Results:

    • Chest pain occurred in 0.288% of patient visits.
    • Idiopathic chest pain (45%) and costochondritis (22.5%) were the most common diagnoses.
    • Other causes included bronchitis, muscle strain, trauma, and miscellaneous factors.
    • Average ages were 12.9 years for boys and 11.8 years for girls.

    Conclusions:

    • Pediatric chest pain is generally not indicative of serious underlying pathology.
    • A thorough history and physical examination are usually sufficient to rule out ominous causes.
    • Cardiac disease is an infrequent cause of chest pain in children.
