Background:

  • Mediopatellar plica syndrome is a common cause of medial knee pain.
  • Diagnosis can be challenging, with plica often identified during arthroscopy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of arthroscopic removal of symptomatic mediopatellar plica.
  • To assess the effectiveness of this procedure in patients with and without chondropathy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 14 patients undergoing arthroscopic plica removal.
  • Surgical indication was a thickened, symptomatic mediopatellar plica.
  • Chondropathy grading (I or II) was assessed on the medial femoral condyle and patella.

Main Results:

  • 93% of patients achieved good to excellent outcomes.
  • Successful treatment was observed in knees with or without chondromalacia.
  • Preoperative diagnosis of pathological plica was made in only 3 cases.

Conclusions:

  • Arthroscopic resection of symptomatic mediopatellar plica is a highly effective treatment for medial knee pain.
  • The procedure demonstrates good results irrespective of the presence or grade of chondropathy.
  • Early diagnosis and intervention may improve patient outcomes.
