Background:

Groin hernias are common, accounting for 15% of general surgery operations.
Collagen metabolic dysfunction is implicated in the etiology of groin hernias.
The Shouldice technique offers an optimal view for surgical intervention in the inguinal region.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of the Shouldice technique for primary inguinal hernia repair.
To assess the recurrence rate and rehabilitation speed associated with the Shouldice operation.

Main Methods:

A retrospective analysis of 206 male patients undergoing primary inguinal hernia repair (direct, indirect, or both) using the Shouldice technique.
Operations were performed between 1986 and 1996 in South Africa and Hungary.
Patients received spinal (175) or local anesthesia (31).

Main Results:

The Shouldice technique was performed as originally described in 1945.
A low recurrence rate of 2% was reported.
The study highlights rapid patient rehabilitation as a key benefit.
