Area of Science:

  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Occupational Health
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Pulmonary asbestosis is interstitial lung fibrosis caused by asbestos exposure.
  • High-risk occupations include mining, manufacturing, construction, and shipbuilding.
  • Diagnosis relies on clinical and pathological evidence.

Observation:

  • A case of asbestosis confirmed by histology is presented.
  • High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) revealed ground-glass opacity, linear shadows, subpleural lines, and parenchymal bands.
  • No asbestos plaques or calcifications were observed on HRCT.

Findings:

  • Histologic examination of an open-lung biopsy correlated with HRCT findings.
  • The biopsy showed significant asbestos bodies and black dust deposition.

Related Experiment Videos

  • These findings confirm interstitial fibrosis consistent with asbestosis.
  • Implications:

    • HRCT is a valuable tool for diagnosing asbestosis, complementing histopathology.
    • Understanding occupational risks is crucial for early detection and prevention.
    • This case highlights the importance of recognizing asbestosis in at-risk populations.
