Observation:

  • A 3.5 cm subcutaneous phyma was surgically removed from a cat's left inframandibular region.
  • Histopathological examination revealed a swollen medial retropharyngeal lymph node.
  • An actinomycotic abscess was identified within the lymph node.

Findings:

  • Filamentous organisms within the abscess stained positively with Gram's, Grocott's, and PAS methods.
  • The organisms were Ziehl-Neelsen negative.
  • Immunoperoxidase staining identified the organisms as Actinomyces viscosus serotype 2.

Implications:

  • This case highlights Actinomyces viscosus serotype 2 as a causative agent of feline lymphadenopathy.
  • Accurate identification of the causative agent is crucial for appropriate treatment and prognosis.
  • Further research into feline actinomycosis may improve diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
