Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Pathology
  • Oncology

Context:

  • Retinoblastoma is a pediatric eye cancer.
  • Histopathological analysis is crucial for understanding tumor behavior.

Purpose:

  • To describe the histopathological features of retinoblastoma.
  • To differentiate between undifferentiated and differentiated forms of retinoblastoma.

Summary:

  • Analysis of 14 retinoblastoma cases over 15 years revealed 12 undifferentiated and 2 differentiated forms.
  • Undifferentiated retinoblastoma showed small cells with high nucleus-to-cytoplasm ratio, irregular cellular density (perivascular), poor stroma, frequent necrosis, and increased vascularity.
  • Melanin pigment was observed in some cases without tumoral proliferation.

Impact:

  • Provides detailed histopathological insights into retinoblastoma subtypes.
  • Aids in understanding the aggressive nature of undifferentiated retinoblastoma.
  • Contributes to the differential diagnosis of retinoblastoma.
