Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Gynecology
  • Medical Case Reports

Background:

  • Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are common contraceptives.
  • Complications, though rare, can occur with long-term IUD use.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with recurrent cystitis after 10 years of IUD usage.
  • Imaging revealed a large bladder calculus associated with the IUD.

Findings:

  • Surgical removal (cystolithotomy) exposed a 6 cm bladder calculus.
  • The calculus was found to be directly attached to the intrauterine device.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a rare but significant complication of long-term IUD use.
  • Prompt diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial for successful management.
