Summary

Spindle cell malignant melanoma (SCMM) cases negative for HMB45 showed a less aggressive clinical course and better survival rates compared to HMB45-positive SCMM. This suggests HMB45 status is a key prognostic indicator in SCMM.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Dermatopathology
  • Cancer Research

Background:

  • Desmoplastic malignant melanoma (DMM) and spindle cell malignant melanoma (SCMM) represent a spectrum of melanoma subtypes.
  • HMB45, a marker for premelanosomes, is often negative in DMM, suggesting its potential role in differentiating melanoma subtypes.
