    Summary

This study examined constructional praxis in 69 children aged 5-6 years. While age groups showed similar scores, five-year-old boys and girls performed differently, suggesting developmental insights.

    Area of Science:

    • Developmental Psychology
    • Neuropsychology
    • Child Development

    Background:

    • Constructional praxis, the ability to copy or construct figures, is crucial for cognitive development.
    • Existing norms for specific tests may require validation and expansion.
    • Understanding developmental trajectories is key for identifying potential learning or neurological differences.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To validate existing norms for constructional praxis tests.
    • To collect normative data for the Gesell Block Test and Benton and Fogel Test of Constructional Praxis.
    • To identify a developmental continuum in constructional praxis ability.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed constructional praxis in 69 typically developing 5- and 6-year-old children.
    • Utilized the Gesell Block Test and the Benton and Fogel Test of Constructional Praxis.
    • Analyzed data for age-group differences and sex differences within age groups.

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference in scores was found between the 5- and 6-year-old groups.
    • A statistically significant difference (p < .05) was observed between 5-year-old boys and girls.
    • The study indicated that the tests reflect a developmental continuum.

    Conclusions:

    • The Gesell Block Test and Benton and Fogel Test of Constructional Praxis show potential for assessing developmental progression.
    • Further revisions and larger sample sizes, including children with brain damage, could enhance their clinical utility.
    • Sex-based differences in early development of constructional praxis warrant further investigation.
