Summary

Panic attacks do not significantly impact mitral valve prolapse (MVP). This study found no link between panic disorder and the development or type of MVP, suggesting panic attacks are not a risk factor.

Background:

  • Panic attacks are theorized to influence mitral valve prolapse (MVP) through hemodynamic or indirect mechanisms.
  • MVP can manifest as physiological (benign) or pathological (poor prognosis) types.
  • The relationship between panic attacks and MVP type requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if panic attacks, as a potential risk factor, are associated with the physiological or pathological type of mitral valve prolapse.
  • To investigate the impact of panic disorder duration on MVP characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • Comparison of demographic data, symptoms, and echocardiographic findings between two groups of patients with panic disorder.
  • Group 1: Panic disorder onset within 1 year (n=24).
