    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Surgery
    • Neonatal Medicine
    • Congenital Abnormalities

    Context:

    • Umbilical cord hernia (gastroschisis) is a congenital defect.
    • This study observed 38 pediatric patients with this condition.

    Purpose:

    • To analyze the outcomes and mortality associated with umbilical cord hernias in children.
    • To evaluate the effectiveness of conservative therapy for umbilical cord hernias.

    Summary:

    • Of 38 children with umbilical cord hernias, 27 had additional congenital defects.
    • A total of 14 deaths (56.2%) occurred among 25 evaluated children.
    • Conservative therapy in 13 patients resulted in 10 deaths (76.9% mortality).

    Impact:

    • Highlights the severe prognosis of umbilical cord hernias, especially with co-occurring defects.
    • Suggests limited efficacy of conservative management for umbilical cord hernias.
    • Underscores the need for further research into optimal treatment strategies for gastroschisis.
