Summary

Laser turbinectomy effectively treated chronic rhinitis by reducing turbinate tissue. Histological analysis revealed epithelial regeneration and decreased gland activity, correlating with improved nasal obstruction symptoms.

Background:

  • Chronic non-allergic rhinitis frequently causes nasal obstruction.
  • Inferior turbinate hypertrophy is a common cause of this obstruction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the ultrastructural changes in the inferior turbinates after CO2 laser turbinectomy.
  • To correlate these histological findings with clinical outcomes in patients with chronic rhinitis.

Main Methods:

  • Ten patients with chronic rhinitis and inferior turbinate hypertrophy underwent CO2 laser turbinectomy.
  • Tissue biopsies were obtained during surgery and one month post-surgery.
  • Transmission electron microscopy was used for ultrastructural analysis.

  • Early epithelial loss was observed, followed by rapid regeneration of healthy epithelium.
