Summary

Continuous spinal anesthesia using catheters did not prevent hearing loss after spinal anesthesia, despite potential dura plugging. Hearing impairment occurred in 37% of catheter patients versus 43% in single-shot, but lasted longer with catheters.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of spinal catheters in preventing hearing loss post-spinal anesthesia.
  • To compare hearing outcomes between single-shot spinal anesthesia and continuous spinal anesthesia with catheters.

Main Methods:

  • Audiometric evaluation before and after anesthesia in 40 patients (21 single-shot, 19 continuous spinal).
  • Spinal catheters were in place for 24 hours.
  • Hearing impairment defined as a threshold change > 10 dB.
