Background:
Transfusion is known to alter the recipient's blood group, protein allotype, and alloenzyme phenotype by the introduction of donor material and the dilution of his or her own cells and proteins. There is little information about typing the DNA of blood after transfusion.
Study Design And Methods:
Ten adult patients who had undergone massive transfusion with white cell-containing blood components were studied. Pretransfusion and posttransfusion blood specimen DNA types were compared by using Southern blot and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses.
Results:
DNA types were identical in all 90 paired observations.
Conclusion:
These preliminary findings, in a limited number of patients, suggest that certain DNA methods may provide reliable typing of adult recipients after massive transfusion.
