Background:

  • Previous studies in dogs revealed that kidneys generate electric waves.
  • A characteristic electrorenogram (ERG) pattern was identified in normal canine kidneys.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the ERG pattern in normal human kidneys.
  • To analyze ERG patterns in various human renal pathologies.

Main Methods:

  • The study included 12 patients with chronic renal failure, 14 with hydronephrosis, 10 with renal cell carcinoma, 10 post-nephrectomy, and 12 healthy volunteers.
  • Three Beckman electrodes were placed on the loin skin for noninvasive recording.
  • 20-minute recording sessions were conducted at least twice for each subject.

Main Results:

  • Normal human kidneys exhibited consistent ERG patterns across three electrodes.
  • Chronic renal failure showed 'bradyarrhythmia' (early) and 'silent' (advanced) ERG patterns.
  • Hydronephrosis presented 'bradyarrhythmic' (functioning) or 'silent' (nonfunctioning) patterns; renal cell carcinoma showed 'tachyarrhythmic' patterns; nephrectomized patients had 'silent' ERGs.

Conclusions:

  • A distinct ERG pattern for the normal human kidney was identified.
  • Specific ERG patterns correlate with different renal pathologies.
  • The ERG technique is a simple, noninvasive, and nonradiologic tool for renal condition diagnosis.
