1College of Nursing, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston 29425, USA.
Insights
A new multidisciplinary congestive heart failure (CHF) clinic was developed to improve patient care and manage costs. This initiative also focused on advancing the role of nurse practitioners in managing CHF patients.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Healthcare Management
Background:
- Congestive heart failure (CHF) continues to be a significant cause of illness and death globally.
- Healthcare systems face increasing pressure to implement cost-effective strategies.
- Developing innovative care models is crucial for managing chronic diseases like CHF.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe the establishment of a multidisciplinary outpatient congestive heart failure (CHF) clinic.
- To detail the clinical evolution and integration of the nurse practitioner role within this new setting.
Main Methods:
- Implementation of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team approach.
- Establishment of an outpatient clinic specifically for CHF patients.
- Focus on the development and role expansion of nurse practitioners.
Main Results:
- Successfully launched a collaborative outpatient CHF clinic.
- Facilitated the clinical growth and defined responsibilities of nurse practitioners.
- Provided a cost-conscious model for CHF management.
Conclusions:
- Multidisciplinary outpatient clinics are effective for managing congestive heart failure (CHF).
- Integrating nurse practitioners enhances CHF care delivery.
- This model offers a viable, cost-effective approach to CHF management in hospitals.
Abstract:
Despite advances in the prevention and treatment of many cardiovascular diseases, congestive heart failure (CHF) remains a major cause of morbidity and death in most developed countries. During this era of uncertainty in health care, cost-conscious tactics are being implemented widely among U.S. hospitals. One such tactic, in the form of a multidisciplinary outpatient CHF clinic, was implemented in June of 1995 at a university medical center in the southeastern United States. This article discusses the process of developing a collaborative multidisciplinary outpatient CHF clinic, and the concomitant clinical development of the nurse practitioner role.
