Summary

For children undergoing ear tube surgery, preoperative oral pain medication like acetaminophen or ibuprofen offers little benefit. Intraoperative topical anesthetic eardrops effectively manage postoperative pain, making additional oral analgesics unnecessary.

Background:

  • Bilateral myringotomy with tympanostomy tube placement is a common pediatric surgical procedure.
  • Effective postoperative pain management for these children remains a significant concern.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of preoperative oral analgesics (acetaminophen, acetaminophen with codeine, ibuprofen) compared to placebo for postoperative pain relief in children undergoing tympanostomy tube placement.
  • To determine if intraoperative topical analgesia is sufficient for pain management.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study.
  • 200 pediatric patients were divided into four groups receiving different preoperative oral medications or placebo.
