Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Cardiology
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Enterococcus avium is infrequently identified as a human pathogen.
  • Endocarditis is a serious infection of the heart valves.

Observation:

  • A case of infective endocarditis caused by Enterococcus avium is presented.
  • The patient experienced severe aortic insufficiency, necessitating surgical intervention.

Findings:

  • Enterococcus avium demonstrated susceptibility to ampicillin and gentamicin.
  • Despite antibiotic treatment, severe aortic insufficiency required valve replacement surgery.

Implications:

  • Enterococcus avium should be recognized as a potential pathogen in cases of endocarditis.
