    Summary

Endometriosis in laparotomy scars, often considered rare, may be more common than previously thought. This condition can develop after abdominal hysterotomy, suggesting a need for increased awareness and diagnosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Gynecology
    • Surgical Pathology

    Background:

    • Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus.
    • Laparotomy scars are surgical incisions in the abdomen.
    • Abdominal hysterotomy is a surgical procedure to deliver a baby through an incision in the uterus and abdominal wall.

    Observation:

    • Two cases of endometriosis occurring in laparotomy scars were reported within a single month.
    • These cases followed abdominal hysterotomy procedures.

    Findings:

    • The occurrence of two cases in a short period suggests that endometriosis of laparotomy scars may be underdiagnosed rather than rare.
    • Abdominal hysterotomy presents an opportunity for the development of scar endometriosis.

    Implications:

    • Clinicians should consider endometriosis in the differential diagnosis of painful or symptomatic laparotomy scars, especially after hysterotomy.
    • Increased vigilance and diagnostic awareness may be necessary for this condition.
