Summary

Mercury exposure in workers did not affect T-cell proliferation. However, a reduced CD4+ lymphocyte count was observed, indicating a potential immune system alteration in mercury-exposed individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess T-cell proliferative response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) in mercury-exposed workers.
  • To correlate immune changes with mercury levels and exposure duration.

  • Studied 33 mercury-producing plant workers with mean exposure of 19 months.
  • Measured urinary mercury levels, T-cell subsets (CD4+, CD8+), and PHA-stimulated lymphocyte proliferation.
