Background:

  • Myotonic dystrophy is a multisystem disorder affecting muscle function.
  • Gastrointestinal dysfunction, including faecal incontinence, can occur in myotonic dystrophy patients.

Observation:

  • Two siblings with myotonic dystrophy presented with faecal incontinence.
  • Anorectal manometry, EMG, and muscle biopsies were performed to investigate the pathophysiology.

Findings:

  • The pathophysiology of faecal incontinence in these patients involved anorectal sphincter dysfunction.
  • Both medical and surgical management approaches provided unsatisfactory long-term results.

Implications:

  • Gastrointestinal musculature involvement is a characteristic feature of myotonic dystrophy.
  • Further research is needed to develop effective long-term management strategies for faecal incontinence in myotonic dystrophy.
