[Postmortem diagnosis of mixed respiratory virus infections in children]
Abstract:
Mixed respiratory virus infection in fatal cases in children was documented in the laboratory in 41% of cases though clinical and morphological signs had been determined only in half of the cases. Most effective tests in diagnosis of the mixed infection include immunofluorescent examinations of impressions of respiratory organs as well as tissue culture infected with blood or specimens of parenchymatous organs. In some cases detection of adenovirus antigen or isolation of adenovirus were regarded as a manifestation of latent infection, particularly when adenovirus antigen was discovered in impressions of the spleen, tonsils or lymph nodes. Only intravital detection of virus antigens in all cases coincided with the presence of clinical and morphological signs of mixed disease.
Insights
Laboratory diagnosis identified mixed respiratory virus infections in 41% of fatal pediatric cases. Immunofluorescence and tissue culture were most effective for diagnosing these complex infections, especially when clinical signs were absent.
