    Summary

    This study investigated an erythema infectiosum outbreak, finding no evidence of rubella virus infection. Rubella vaccination did not prevent children from contracting fifth disease during the school outbreak.

    Background:

    • Erythema infectiosum, also known as fifth disease, is a common childhood illness.
    • Rubella virus has been suspected as a potential cause for some cases of erythema infectiosum.
    • An investigation was warranted to clarify the etiology and prevention of erythema infectiosum during an outbreak.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine if rubella virus was the causative agent of erythema infectiosum in a North Carolina elementary school outbreak.
    • To assess the efficacy of rubella virus vaccination in preventing erythema infectiosum.

    Main Methods:

    • Viral isolation attempts from throat swabs of affected children and healthy controls.
    • Epidemiological survey using questionnaires for students to gather data on illness and vaccination history.
    • Analysis of illness patterns and household contact transmission.

    • No viruses, including rubella virus, were recovered from any of the children tested.
    • A significant percentage of students reported acute exanthematous illness during the outbreak period.
